Description:
The Wisconsin State Employees Union (WSEU) is dedicated to representing, supporting, and advocating for the rights and interests of public employees across Wisconsin. We are seeking a passionate and articulate Press & Media Relations Specialist to strengthen our narrative, amplify our members’ voices, and foster positive relationships with the public and the press. If you’re driven by social justice, skilled in media outreach, and eager to influence public discourse, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Media Strategy & Outreach:
    Develop and execute comprehensive media strategies that highlight our union’s initiatives, campaigns, and successes.
    Cultivate relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets to ensure WSEU’s stories, insights, and perspectives reach a broad audience.
  • Content Creation & Messaging:
    Draft compelling press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and talking points that accurately reflect our mission, values, and policy priorities.
    Collaborate with internal teams to produce multimedia content (videos, infographics, social posts) that resonates with members, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Crisis Communication & Rapid Response:
    Act as a first responder to urgent media inquiries and crisis situations, ensuring consistent, transparent messaging.
    Monitor news cycles, social media conversations, and policy developments to identify opportunities for timely engagement and response.
  • Brand Management & Storytelling:
    Work closely with leadership and organizers to develop authentic narratives that uplift member stories and highlight the union’s impact.
    Ensure all communications maintain a consistent brand identity, tone, and style that align with WSEU’s core values and principles.
  • Measurement & Analysis:
    Track media coverage, audience reach, and sentiment to measure the effectiveness of communication efforts.
    Provide regular reports and recommendations for improving outreach, engagement, and messaging strategies.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:
    A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science, or a related field is preferred.
    3–5 years of experience in media relations, communications, or public affairs; experience working with labor organizations, non-profits, or advocacy groups is a plus.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    Strong writing and editing abilities, with a keen eye for detail and clarity.
    Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, especially with journalists and media professionals.
    Ability to balance multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and adapt quickly to evolving narratives.
    Proficiency with social media platforms, content management systems, and basic analytics tools.
